Volleyball hosts Parent Appreciation Night

The Wood Ducks continued their successful season with a pair of victories over MCAC Division opponents over the weekend, giving them a season record of 22-3 while being ranked #5 in the country.  The Wood Ducks defeated Riverland CC 3-0, and then Minnesota West CC 3-1.  The team was led by freshman Alexis Helmin with 23 kills 5 blocks, which earned her MCACA Athlete of the Week honor for the third time this season. Sophomores Jamie Ihfe, Kiyomi Callahan, and Kalley Vugteveen balanced out the offense with 20 kills, 18 kills, and 17 kills apiece. The win against Minnesota West also left with Century alone in first place in the southern division.

The victory over Riverland CC was Parent Appreciation Night. "The players called me up and asked if it would be possible to do a night to thank their parents," stated coach Jay Kam. "We talk about gratitude throughout the season. We are grateful for our opponents, our officials, and especially our families. Without them, they would not be where they are.  Parents paid for and drove them to lessons and club volleyball. They are the ones filling the stands and being the biggest fans we have."

Coach Jay Kam stated "The players routinely teach me and remind me to reflect. When I first took the position as the head coach, my girls were in 5th and 6th grade. My wife also worked full time, so my in-law's helped us out a lot. Without their support I would not have been able to put in the time needed to get this program going. We love our parents, and I was happy that the players wanted this night."
